II. Plan: Preparations that need to be made in advance to carry out activities in Unit 3.
August 2nd: Acquire letters, border, and background paper to
create large map on bulletin board on August 17.
August 2nd: Create list of artifacts to distribute for artifact
project, make copies.
August 3rd: Print copies of excerpt from Code of Hammurabi.
August 3rd: Print assessment, make copies for students. Place all
printed material into accordion folder for class.

III. Objectives: Objectives are ordered using Bloom’s Taxonomy, to classify objective levels, and to assure all cognitive levels are exercised.
1. Objective 1 is to remember: Students will be able to identify and recall geography of Ancient Mesopotamia.
1.1 Identify bodies of water and two rivers surrounding Mesopotamia
1.2 Explain ancient irrigation techniques
1.3 Explain how irrigation affected trade
1.4 Recall geographical terms
2. Objective 2 is to understand: Students will categorize five early traits of early civilization and relate to Mesopotamia.
2.1 List traits of civilization
2.2 Define each trait of civilization
2.3 Map city states of Sumer
2.4 Explain polytheism and four main gods of Mesopotamia
3. Objective 3 is to apply: Students will implement geographical terms and features on classroom bulletin board, which will be constructed as a group.
3.1 List rivers, water bodies, city-states and mountains, and continent of Mesopotamia
3.2 Create bulletin sized diagram of land and water for class map
3.3 Create labels and drawings of listed items from 3.1
3.4 Plot labels and drawings
4. Objective 4 is to analyze: Students will analyze social/class and labor/trade divisions.
4.1 Know terms and importance of early written language
4.2 Critique role of women and slaves in Mesopotamian society
4.3 Differentiate importance of invention of writing verses work tools
4.4 Categorize inventions into social, religious, or writing categories
5. Objective 5 is to evaluate: Students will critique the Code of Hammurabi.
5.1 Know terms and importance of early written language
5.2 Discuss why Hammurabi felt a need for creation of law
5.3 Explain and Hammurabi’s Code of Law, discuss “Eye for an Eye” label
5.4 Critique ten of 282 codes and contrast to present-day
6. Objective 6 is to create: Students will create an ancient artifact from the unit.
6.1 List types of artifacts from Mesopotamian era
6.2 Discuss importance of artifacts
6.3 Design artifacts as part of final assessment
6.4 Each student explains artifact and places on table in front of map for display

IV. Assessment: Two exams will be given for this unit.
1. August 20 – short map test (15 minutes)
2. August 27 – Unit Assessment (50 minutes)

V. Content Benchmarks: Standards met for 7th grade Social Studies:
According to the Mississippi Department of Education, Ancient Civilizations is a benchmark unit plan theme as part of exploration of Asian history in 7th grade Social Studies class: ”Eastern Hemisphere Studies to 1750.”

1. Examine characteristics and development of various societies in the Eastern Hemisphere prior to 1750. (H)
2. Apply spatial and ecological perspectives to people, places, and environment using social studies tools
3. Analyze civic life, politics, and government.

August 20: 15 minute map quiz and exploring polytheism

VIII. Leading and IX. Controlling
Leadership and control of this unit (and this classroom in general) will be kept by following the structure and time constraints outlined in the syllabus and this lesson plan. All projects and assignments must be turned in ON TIME with NO EXCUSES. Time constraints on exams are also strictly enforced to keep the unit on time.
The classroom management/behavior contract that each student signed the first week of class and Weaver High School’s assertive management plan will be followed as outlined.
