No. 5. Motivation and Management

INTASC 5 states that new teachers must use individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active participation, and self-motivation. To demonstrate this INTASC standard, along with the content in the video of my philosophy of education, I have listed five websites of local school districts and have explored how each district handles discipline and safety issues. Below are links to local school districts:

Jackson Public School District
Rankin County School District, Brandon, MS
Madison County School District

All of these school districts have supervision of students entering and exiting the school provided by teachers, bus drivers, and other staff. More importantly, our schools have local police staff to monitor campus activity as well. At least three of the five have set procedures for 911 emergencies, and a few specific officers assigned to the school district.

Most Jackson metro area schools set disciplinary procedures set for the school. Many have handbooks in which students have a direct resource for disciplinary and attendance policies. Madison County has a detailed online version of their handbook, which gives parents a direct resource for handbook procedures and other resources that never made it home via their child. Our school districts have all updated their websites in recent years to give instant information to parents who wish to be active in their children’s education and day to day school behavior, which allows easier monitoring for assurance of behavior.
Instant, informal interaction with teachers and grade reports also offers most students extra motivation to maintain on the right track as far as their behavior and grades are concerned. Some students still need the extra attention, understanding, and external motivation, but as stated under my Philosophy of Education Section:

"Starting in seventh grade, I played on the basketball team, I cheered on the cheerleading squad, and I ran all distance races for the high school track team. In ninth grade, I joined the high school softball team. That spring semester, I alone started Newton High School’s first cross country team. This means that I recruited other teenagers my own age, athletes and non-athletes, and convinced them to run an average of five miles a day. There is no dispute that I am a natural motivator." (Weaver, Merry with a Motive)

No. 6. Communication and Technology

Qualifications met under the technology and communication INTASC standard can be found under the page above entitled "EDCI 589 Technology Integration."  This masters course explored all different kinds of technology and how it plays into the learning environment.  My experience with technology is higher than average, especially when analyzing how technology can be integrated for the benefit of business/learning.  I currently work for the United States' most advanced wireless communications provider.  We seek opportunity to implement extensive business solutions on hand held devices and wireless tablets to help the business with it's productivity and remote work force.

No. 7. Planning

INTASC Standard 7 explains that teachers should be able to apply efficient educational planning strategy. I have developed a unit plan for 7th grade Social Studies which is visible by clicking on the page title "Unit Plan Example."

No. 8. Assessment

INTASC Standard 8 explains that teachers should be able to create and administer valid assessments to measure student success in absorbing material taught. Along with the Unit Plan Example provided, you may also visit it's corresponding assessment by clicking on the "Unit Assessment Example" page.

No. 9. Reflective Practice: Professional Growth

According to INTASC Standard 9, a teacher should continually evaluate him or herself and seek opportunities to grow professionally. One area to evaluate qualities and branch into within education is the education of exceptional children. There are several different areas of specialization in the education of exceptional children. As defined by the Council of Exceptional Children, an exceptional child is one with disabilities or who is talented and gifted. The purpose of this writing is to associate my talents and personality traits with those necessary to be successful in educating exceptional students, for both professional growth, and to broaden the horizon my possibilities within the field of education.
Three qualifications needed to be successful in educating students with disabilities are creativity, motivation, and organization. Educators of exceptional students have more administrative tasks and must remain organized in order to maximize time for student and parent interaction. My professional resume and simultaneous duties as a mother automatically ascertain my success in time management and ability to complete and manage administrative tasks. I have worked sixty hour weeks, managing others, running events and sometimes entire offices, all while keeping my home life as a mother, wife, and cleaner of all things dirty well preserved.

As a six year cheer instructor, I am a natural motivator and have countless references to validate motivation as a personal attribute. In high school, I motivated others to run several miles a day for our new cross country team, even with me, a fellow student, as the coach. In particular, at Ole Miss University cheerleading camp, I have taught cheers, dances, and stunts to groups of up to thirteen hundred teenage cheerleaders at one time, sometimes holding their attention for a whole hour. As the youngest employee at Bath Fitter by at least ten years, I was chosen by Bath Fitter corporate in Nashville as the individual to implement the Fish Philosophy. The Fish philosophy was developed by John Christensen, son of Ray Christensen who authored “To Touch a Butterfly” in 1981. Fish is a motivational philosophy which can be used as a human resources technique for corporations to improve employee relationships with customers for progressive and long-term business results.

Creativity, the third characteristic outlined as vital to educators of exceptional children is a characteristic that has been instilled in my personal education since first grade. As a first grader, I began the talented and gifted program at Newton Elementary School called L.I.F.T., which is an acronym for “Learning is Fun Together.” During LIFT classes, we explored vocabulary, spontaneous thinking exercises, and prepared for competition with other schools at local ECTAG meetings. ECTAG stands for the East Central Mississippi region of talented and gifted programs. ECTAG is an acronym for East Central Talented and Gifted. Even as elementary students, we traveled and competed in state level competitions, writing plays and creating structures out of balsa wood for a competition known as O.M., or Odyssey of the Mind. Newton ends the talented and gifted program in the ninth grade. I participated vigorously from the first grade to the end of eight grade.

With my previous experience with talented and gifted, and these three personal characteristics, I qualify to be an educator of talented and gifted students. With my undergraduate major in Communications and minor in Deaf Education, I may also be an asset to the Division of Communicative Disabilities and Deafness (DCDD). I am open to possibilities and welcome opportunity for professional and education growth.
